How to Write a Software Engineer Resume
Engineering managers scan resumes in seconds looking for tech stacks, scale, and impact. Here is how to format your SWE resume to get the interview.
Build a Tech Resume FreeThe Anatomy of a Great Tech Resume
1. The Skills Matrix
Applicant Tracking Systems are ruthless when it comes to tech stacks. If the job asks for "React", and you write "Frontend UI Development", you will fail the scan. Clearly list your tools: Languages (Python, Go), Frameworks (React, Django), and Cloud (AWS, Docker).
2. Scale and Impact
Everyone can build a basic CRUD app. What sets Senior engineers apart is scale. Use numbers: how many users? How many requests per second? How much cloud cost was saved? How much did page load time decrease?
3. Clear Links
Include clickable links to your GitHub and personal portfolio at the very top. Make sure the URLs are clean (e.g., github.com/username) and that the repositories you link to are public and well-documented.
Software Engineer Resume FAQ
Create a dedicated "Skills" section at the top or bottom of your resume. Break it down into categories: "Languages", "Frameworks/Libraries", "Databases", and "Tools". This allows ATS to easily parse your exact tech stack.
Yes. Engineering managers often check GitHub. Include your GitHub, LinkedIn, and personal portfolio URL in the contact header. Ensure your pinned GitHub repositories have good READMEs.
Do not just say "Built a REST API". Say "Designed and built a Node.js REST API serving 50K requests/min, reducing latency by 40% and saving $2,000/mo in AWS costs." Mention the scale, the tools, and the business impact.
